The tongue is an important organ in our body as it helps us to accomplish many necessary tasks. A healthy and properly shaped tongue is responsible for speaking, eating, and other daily tasks that make us human. Using these organs to eat, speak, or clean our teeth can cause them to harbor bacteria. Proper cleaning needs to occur just as often as you brush your teeth to prevent damage to your mouth. Here are some of the elements of your tongue that can tell you more about your oral and physical health.
1- The Tongue Is Bright Red, White, Or Blue
Tongues can come in many shades of red and pink, but other colors could indicate underlying health issues. Light pink tongues with a light coating are considered healthy, but some people have darker tongues than others. Variations of pink or light red are not causes for concern of health issues.
A bright red color, similar to how it looks after eating a lollipop, could mean vitamin deficiencies like B12 or folic acid. Pale tongues could be a lack of blood flow or anemia.
Purple or blue could signal very low oxygen levels in your blood. This could also be an indicator of circulatory issues that could be showing up in different parts of the body as well, including your feet and hands. Your tongue can also change color when you have a change of texture or a sore. These are further discussed below.
2- Added Or New Textures
One condition that can occur on a tongue is referred to as a hairy tongue. It comes with a brown, black, or white discoloration and will look like tiny hairs. Hairy tongue is caused by a lack of oral hygiene, smoking, or extensive use of antibiotics.
A thick white coating is an indicator of oral thrush, which is a fungal infection. Oral thrush is caused by yeast and could lead to food tasting bland for some individuals. This is easily treated with an antifungal drug that will return the tongue to normal color and texture. You can also brush and scrap your tongue frequently to prevent thrush.
Fissured Tongue is a typically harmless condition but could indicate psoriasis or inflammation. This creates deep grooves, which could make it look less appealing.
A less common occurrence is the geographic tongue. This happens mostly in middle-aged adults and the cause is unknown. It comes with red patches that have slightly raised borders that resemble islands. The rest of the tongue will remain smooth surrounding these raised areas.
3- Changes In Shape And Size
Swelling or scalloped edges are the most common changes in the size of your tongue. Swelling can happen when you experience hormonal changes, infections, or eat something you are allergic to. Most often, oral swelling can be remedied by medication or a change of diet.
Scalloped edges begin as your tongue presses against your teeth. Those with sleep apnea or bruxism could experience changes in shape as the tongue will be forced into odd positions in the mouth.
4- Soreness Or Pain
Any pain or soreness on your tongue is a cause for concern. Sometimes pain or sores could occur from accidental biting, drinking something hot, or other serious issues like infections. Some people experience what is called burning mouth syndrome, which is a chronic condition. There is no known cure for BMS, but there are some medications that can limit the burning and stinging.
Other individuals could see ulcers or sores because of external factors, bad health choices, or genetics. Some of these ulcers could be cancerous but could be caused by stress, STDs, genetics, or other factors.
